The original Just Cause aimed to be a more stunt-oriented version of Grand Theft Auto. Not a bad idea, but the execution left a lot to be desired because the gameplay felt uninspired, the combat was uninteresting and there were plenty of technical bugs. Overall it seemed like the concept would be a failure. Four years later, in 2010, Avalanche dropped us into one of the biggest maps video games have ever seen and threw out the laws of physics.
