When Will Wright first pitched his personal life-simulating side project to Maxis, the board said “What is this? He wants to do an interactive dollhouse? The guy is out of his mind!” according to co-founder Jeff Braun. It’s not hard to see where the SimCity publisher was coming from. Video games, after all, are supposed to be the ultimate form of escapsim, so it’s no surprise that simulating everyday life seemed like a pretty bad idea at the time. Despite that, the series became one of the most successful franchises on the PC with over 175 million sales worldwide, proving the possibility that maybe video games aren’t just for escapism after all.
