View Full Version : Redesign of PSB

Not entirely, but there are certain areas of the site I want redesigned. Actually there are a lot of areas I want redesigned on both the site and forums, but we'll do the site first.

I have attached two large images, circling areas of the site I want to modify the look of. The modifications don't have to be drastic, as it still needs to work within the space it is given, but I feel it needs a bit more work.

Here is the letter of each section and what I want changed about it:

A
This ad is pretty useless, ugly, and it needs to go. Unfortunately with it missing, it looks far too empty. I also need the login back. I took the old login off because I found it was too large and in your face, and not very good looking. I want a new login to go here, that is subtle, looks good, and doesn't take the focus off the logo like the old one did

B
Not just the top games part, but all of the top / latest lists, I don't really like how it looks. It looks a bit.... cheap. I want something that looks better, but can also fit in additional information. For example, I want a nicer way to have the rankings than just a numbered list like 1) 2) etc.

C
Not entirely sure what it is about this I don't like... I think its the colour clashing, or possibly that each row is too thin... I just don't like the look of it.

D
I've had quite a few complaints that this section just doesn't fit with the rest of the layout.... I'm not sure what to do with it.... get creative I suppose haha

E
This area seems pretty amateurly put together (because it wasn't actually design, I just randomly put it together. The image should somehow integrate with the title, and all look stylish together... not sure exactly how to go about it, get creative :)

F
This kind of ties in with E and G.... all three need to integrate better, they're kind of awkward looking.

G
Doesn't look right, needs to be more stylish (its too plain)

H
This is kind of like C, I think its just too think, maybe make two lines of information per article?

I
I plan on having little thumbnails of each video automatically added in version 2, so I need this to reflect that with a new design.

J
This looks cheap, I need a better layout for the "add to games" and "add to wishlist" buttons

Theres a few other things, but I've already had them redesigned I just need to add it to the site (comments).

If you're interested in any of these, just do one at a time and post what you have. I can give the PSD upon request.

Actually, I was talking to Tom today. He's interested in helping. He'd like to talk with you Dave, when you both have time.

I won't have time today most likely, very busy school day (and obligations after school), however I'll be on most of the day tommorow.

I have a couple of thoughts on this, but I've got to head out soon I'll say them later. ;)

EDIT: Right, personally, I'd like to see the review layout to be over hauled. The font style is too bland and the background is a bit boring.

Take IGN for instance, their font and background make for a more professional look. I'd like something like that to be in PsBeyond, and I know with the talents on here - that it could work very well, and be made brilliantly.

Photoshop, don't fail me now.

I'll get back to you on this when I make a composite done, Dave.

Akira: If I recall, Tom registered here months ago, took up a position on staff, and hasn't shown his face on the community since. I'm sure he's more than capable of getting his ass on the forums if he wants to talk to Dave directly.

I'm definitely open to suggestions, but I'm no designer (unfortunately a lot of the style flaws on the site are a result of me having to improvise design, hence why I want actual designers to try to fix them haha)

Oh right, it's just I feel as though we could strive for more originality in the reviews/previews, hell even news sections.

If you want I could try and find designers? Forum I'm on has a designer corner?

Jeez... I make it sound like I'm on countless forums.

A few people on here are designers, so I'll wait and see what they have to offer.

I should add the review/preview layout to the list in the meantime.... I'll get on that later.

Well, the most obvious thing the reviews need are details at the top of them.

Review scores and all that. But I know you're already working on that!

Dave

I'm working on the functionality of it. I need the design.

I can create tons of great features, but it doesn't mean much if it looks like shit hahaha

I welcome anyone to design me a new review / preview area ontop of the things I've already mentioned.

I moved this to the public forums, so I could get the assistance of some regular members who are designers :)

I'll be looking at concepts. However, it might be best to ask your own designer. Reason for this is that the one who designs the layout has a better idea of style. Not saying we can't do as good or so, but it is just more fluid that way :P

I'll try something soon.

I don't think you know this but I've still got an old version and layout of the site witch isn't layed out good at all.

I'll consider working on it.

1. I'm lazy.
2. I'm a procastinator.
3. I'm Canadian.

So don't count on it.

See what you think.

5 minute design. I'll code it all up if you want. Couple of hours, but not tonight.

I like it, but one thing I've noticed is that the red doesn't contrast well with the black logo type thing (which I love), anything that can be done with that? Add a bit shine or shade maybe.

Looks good to me, however the input fields have too much depth. The rest of the layout is lacking in depth (its very flat looking) so its a bit out of place, perhaps remove the 3D feel of it.

You mean the red bar doesn't look good with the logo? Any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm not sure, the colour should be changed slightly... and the transition from the red to the hovered silver doesn't seem right.

Also, it has to look more crisp, and have a bit more stuff on the front page, some hi res stuff.

Hmmm I think I'm going to have to hire someone to do the redesigns....

I'm going to make a thread soon that I'll compile everyone's ideas for changes together, so I can present them to a designer. I'm really broke right now so I can't do this until around February.

Good idea. However, I'm sure someone will do it for free, I'll have a look around.

Unsticky this ancient thread. Full of fail.

There is actually a redesign already, Drifter, but it's oversimplistic. Personally I think web 2.0 is a bit of a fad, and what we have at the moment is a little better. :S

That said, if it's just pissing about with a PSD and not actually coding it, I'll do it. But I doubt Dave has time to code it at the moment.

Thread is fail. Wasn't commenting on anything regarding the design, commenting on the thread age. Kind of odd to leave such a dated thread as a sticky.
