Chrono Trigger Remake 'A Possibility'

In a 1Up interview last week with Square-Enix Senior Vice-President Hiromichi Tanaka, he mentioned the possibility of a Chrono Trigger remake in the future. "There's still a possibility, but since the main director is not working for Square Enix now -- he's working on other titles in a different company, Namco Bandai, it's a bit difficult to ask him to come back and be the head of a team again. And also, Kato-san is working on the fourth game in the Mana series. So there's still a possibility that he might think he might want to make it again..."

Remakes of old classics have proven to be a profitable approach for Square-Enix, so it isn't unlikely that a remake is made for Chrono Trigger. While it sounds like there are obstacles preventing Chrono Trigger from being made at the current time, which is mentioned in the interview, Square-Enix isn't completely dismissing the idea.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy VII remake have been rampant since the showing of a Final Fantasy 7 Tech Demo at the E3 conference of 2005, demonstrating the Playstation 3's abilities. Square-Enix has responded with conflicting statements regarding whether or not a Final Fantasy VII remake is in the works on numerous occasions, helping to fuel the rumors.

In September of 2004, Square-Enix issued a Cease and Desist letter to put an end to a fan-made remake of Chrono Trigger, sparking rumors that a Chrono Trigger remake from Square-Enix is imminent.

There was no mention in the interview if the game would be made for a next-generation console such as the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360, or geared more towards a handheld market like the Nintendo DS, which Square-Enix has developed a preference for recently....
