Get Unreal!
The latest Unreal 4.0 Engine will be targetting next generation consoles from 2010 onwards as revealed by Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games and creator of Unreal.
Although Mr Sweeney did mention that the hyper-realistic, pro-performance engine would be available for Sony's and Microsofts next behemoths, he also mentioned that Nintendo would also be targetted, IF, there next console was powerful and mature enough to handle the specs.
"Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3 - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also," Sweeney explained. "PCs will follow after that."
We will continue to develop and improve upon the Unreal Engine 4, but until then, there is plenty of life left in the Unreal 3 for the time being, adopting the exclusive 2008 titles in production as we speak that are heavily influenced by the technology, including Epic's Gears Of War sequel due in November, and Capcom's Resident Evil 5.
Due to the hulking nature and capacity of Unreal 3, Epic have confirmed previously that the Nintendo Wii will not be receiving the Engine and its many in-production titles from the company, however, Sweeney did stress that there are certain developers working on secret titles for the machine already, away from Epic's guidance.
Stay tuned for further PS3 info on the Unreal Engine as we get it.
