In a keynote address at Austin GDC, Square Enix's Hiromichi Tanaka annouced that both Final Fantasy XIII and the new MMORPG which has yet to be given a name, are built on Square-Enix's new "cross platform" White Engine.
It was previously suggested by Square-Enix that White Engine was built specifically for PS3, and only the game Final Fantasy XIII would make use of the new engine. However, a new MMORPG, which Square-Enix has mentioned on numerous occasions but has yet to give any details, also uses White Engine, and it will be a cross platform and cross region title. The news of a cross platform engine is very likely to spark further rumors of Final Fantasy XIII heading to the Xbox 360, but at the moment, the unannounced MMORPG is the only game on the engine that will be multiplatform.
At the conference, Tanaka stated that "Development is proceeding smoothly now, with the framework now beginning to take shape. Last year we went through a development reorganization, with the development of our own cross-platform middleware – the white engine. This is the foundation for FFXIII and the new MMO".
