PS3 firmware 2.20 details
The PlayStation Network Operations Director Eric Lempel has posted on the official PlayStation blog detailing the features that are coming with version 2.20 of the PS3’s firmware.
Of note is Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 support, or as it is commonly known, BD-Live. What this means is that you’ll be able to connect to the net while you’re watching supported discs, where you’ll be able to ‘unlock’ extra content. This will vary between discs, but we’re assured it will ‘Keep your [Blu-ray] discs fresh with new content’ and apparently exclusive content could be available only to BD-Live adopters. Some of the first discs to use BD-Live features are Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s The 6th Day and Walk Hard. The PS3 will be the first Blu-ray player in the world with this functionality.
Elsewhere in the firmware update you’ll find:
• Options to copy and export PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP.
• The ability to play DivX and WMV files over 2GB, and a subtitles option for DivX files.
• Resume Play, which allows you to resume a DVD or Blu-ray from where you stopped it, even if it’s been ejected or swapped for another disc (nice!).
• The choice of using a PSP as a remote control for certain files on the PS3.
• Save Target option in the PS3’s browser so you can save files to the hard drive or removable storage media.
