Sony leads 2008 sales in Japan

Famitsu magazine, Japan's leading video game publication, has just posted its first half 2008 sales numbers totals. Though the top 10 software titles are dominated by Nintendo Wii and DS games, the number one best selling game of 2008 thus far is Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G for the PSP, selling over 2 million copies. The PS3 is also represented in the top 10 by Metal Gear Solid 4, with over a half million copies flying off the shelves in just a bit under a month.

The PSP is also the best selling video game hardware. It has sold 1.9 million units in 2008, followed closely by the Wii at 1.7 million.

Though the PS3 is still thoroughly dominated by the Wii in terms of sales, Sony should be pleased with the performance of the PSP. This marks the first time the PSP has been so successful in any region, finally outselling the DS by a substantial amount.
